Newest titles acquired by library vast, varied

A quick glance over the listing of recent additions that can be found on the Emma Waters Summar Library website shows what the library has acquired in the past few months. Here's a sampling of what you'll find when you log onto the website with your student, faculty or staff ID:

• "Workplace Learning in Health and Social Care: A Student's Guide" by Carolyn Jackson and Clare Thurgate (Open University Press, 2011). Themes include how to learn in the workplace and the benefits and challenges of doing so.

• "Selected Blackouts" by John Goldbach (Insomniac Press, 2009). Here's what GoodReads.com has to say about this work of fiction: John Goldbach's utterly original debut collection offers funny and penetrating tales of people struggling with faith, addiction, sex and mortality. Written in a fresh and assured style, these stories follow characters through crack-ups, meltdowns and blackouts.

• "It's Raining Cats and Dogs : An Autism Spectrum Guide to the Confusing World of Idioms, Metaphors and Everyday Expressions" by Michael Barton (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2011). With chapters on shortened expressions, metaphors and double meanings, the author shares specific examples and illustrations to demonstrate how people on the autistic spectrum think. An example: When someone says, "I feel like a pizza," he is essentially saying, "I feel like eating a pizza." The author explains he would take the phrase quite literally and draws a pizza with a head and arms and legs attached.

 And don't forget to visit the "New Books" shelving just to the right from the entrance, where you will find such titles as Susan Cain's "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop" (Crown Publishers, 2012); Kenneth E. Bailey's "Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes" (IVP Academic, 2011); and David I. Kertzer's "The Pope and Mussolini" (Random House, 2014).
